A Lesson From Outer Space

He didn’t know that the grapevine trellis wires
Created a spatial grid
That intercepted radio waves from outer space
Like the Big Dish at Arecibo,

He kept hearing voices as he pruned the Muscat
But sloughed it off as just
Well, the voices that he normally heard,
He answered them by singing
“The Wichita Lineman”
And they answered him back:
“We hear you singing in the wires,
And we know you for all time.”
He bent gently over and cut the spurs from the vine,
Soon it would reach the top wire,
Then maybe the voices would stop.
