When Things Begin Falling Apart

Lay down your best plans
Lay them down,
Bring on the night
With dreams
Of completion,
Raise a glass to your future success,
Boastfully toasting
That there is nothing you can’t do,
That your perceived accomplishments
Are exactly what others also want,
Convince yourself
That you are at the pinnacle,
Riding the crest of the wave,
That you have reached the summit.

It’s just a short walk
From the penthouse to the outhouse,
You have been rejected and snubbed,
Yet smugly you sit
Eating your take-out Chinese,
The only meal you can afford now,
Your debilitated mind
Can’t fathom
Your loss of dreams,
You could have been on stage
With The Boss or maybe Dylan,
Yet you struggle to make it home,
Only to shit your pants
In the doorway.
