The Gun
It was a gun that killed Jesus of Nazareth, The Messiah of God,
It was a gun, the muzzle jammed into the Skull of Calvary,
It's pistol grip a beam of wood,
It's gunsight the Arm of Violence,
It was a 44 Smokeless, a 32-20, A Colt 45 ACP,
It was a .223 Assault Rifle on sale at the sporting goods store,
It was a Glock 9, A Sig Sauer,
It was a lady's pink pistol stuffed in a handbag,
It was a toy wooden gun put into the hands of a small boy,
It was bought with 30 pieces of silver,
Thirty pieces of silver that became the Silver Bullets
Fired from the gun,
He was shot in the left hand and then in the right,
He was shot in both feet, several grazed His head,
The blood streamed down The Gun's barrel
Onto the feet of those that watched,
Another pierced His side and He suffered and died,
When The Gun went off the sound of it reverberated
Throughout the Valley of the Shadow of Death,
A bullet rent the curtain of the Temple of God asunder,
The acrid smoke of The Gun blasted out the lights,
The Light of Day, The Light of God,
"Who pulled the trigger?" a loud voice asked,
"It wasn't I," said the Gun Maker,
"It wasn't I," said the Gun Dealer,
"It wasn't I," said Judas who gave The Gun its power,
"Who was it then?" the voices of the Angels
Cried out to all the People,
Who all turned and walked away
From the Bloody Barrel of The Gun that killed our Savior,
Who pulled the trigger?
You did.
But you didn't kill,
It was The Gun that killed.

Very powerful. You give words to our heart's lament and call us to confession. Our next step is one of active resistance to the forces of death... we continue to hope and rejoice.
The Apostle Paul writes from a dark prison to a little church in Philippi (to people living with violence) saying, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice!"
In the midst of our suffering we continue to sing songs of hope, we practice forgiveness and reconciliation, and we pray fervently for the Peace of God knowing that rejoicing brings peace and peace brings life.
Wow - incredibly powerful & thought provoking.
I've often thought about the dichotomy of people who claim to love God, but love violence and death too. It just doesn't jibe....thank you for sharing this.
