Crows On The Highway

Watching crows and human beings
While driving into work on 69 Highway,
The crows picking at the brains
Of the doe that almost made the leap,
The spotter crow calls out a warning,
They all fly to the median or shoulder,
Then, as seen in the rear view mirror,
Return to continue their crow raiding party,
Feasting on entrails, muscles, and sinew
Until shooed off by the next car
Driven by a human being oblivious to crows,
Obviously oblivious to the doe
As she runs over the carcass
To the blackbirds’ delight,
Who now feast on fresh viscera,
While she picks at the brain of her cellphone
Tap-tapping out a message,
Her finger pecking like a bird’s beak,
About what she had to eat the night before,
Planning her after work trip to the grocery
Where she will pass by the brains in the meat case
Picking out the finest cuts,
All the while talking like a magpie on her earphone
About what she had to eat the night before,
While crows picked the brains of dead does
On Highway 69 on the way into work this morning.
